ADEPT and Mandaworks have been declared the winners of a design competition for an urban development in the Kolkajen-Ropsten area of Stockholm's Royal Seaport. Dubbed the “Royal Neighbour,” the masterplan is anticipated to provide more than 12,000 new homes, supply 35,000 jobs in the next two decades, and create a new cultural area.
Kolkajen and Ropsten lie along the main industrial harbor and were previously prominent players in the management, storage, and processing of coal. The Royal Neighbour divides the area into three distinct regions, and seeks to modernize the outdated area, while using the site’s existing conditions.
The northern region of the masterplan, known as Kolkajen’s Balcony, will host a series of public areas, including terraces and recreation spaces, along a central axis. Through their arrangement, views of the area’s historic structures, cultural activities, and waterfront location will be created, celebrating its diverse features. A canal will form a scenic connection between the existing urban fabric and the new activities, which are to be situated off the main shore on an artificial landform in an effort to reactivate the coast.
The Ropsten Plateau, in contrast, will house the area’s primary commercial and transportation functions. Organized along a methodical grid, it is densely programmed with 70,000 square-meters of offices, hotels, shopping, and a transit hub to establish a strong public presence and fuel the urban atmosphere.
A mixture of building typologies is enabled by the Royal Neighbour’s diverse urban layout, as subdued four-story apartments will serve residents near the parks, canal, and metro station, while an impressive 18-story high-rise will optimize the waterfront. The mass transit system is complemented by a network of pedestrian and bicycle paths to accommodate “soft traffic.” Through this architectural and infrastructural range, the development strives to attract an equally diverse population.
The first phase of construction is slated to begin in 2017.
